Classical Tradition
Ovid's Metamorphoses:
This is Bernini's sculpture from the story about Apollo and Daphne from Ovid's Metamorphoses. In class, we examined this art and related it to the literary interpretation of the myth--this conversation was very engaging and interesting.Throughout examining this sculpture, I learned just how much can be gained from a stoic art piece, and it influenced my interest in Art History classes for the future. My Classics class has helped me understand that literature and art are interwoven, and my goals for the future are to continue the exploration of this connection.

This is Titian's painting of Diana and Acataeon,
another myth popularized by Ovid. We examined the dark, smudgy lines on the right side of the painting made by his finger, which were made to symbolize the blurry lines between Acataeon being human and animal. My Classics class has been a great mix between literature and poetry. He usually brings in paintings/sculptures at the end of our units--tying it all together with visual representations really fascinates me, and I really like this part of the classwork. |
